35 years ago Solidarnosc won elections in Poland, starting democratic chapter of the modern history of Eastern Europe. 20 years ago Poland joined the European Union, starting the fastest economic transformation chapter in the history of the modern world. It is now the central hub of the CEE, where economic value is being built at the fastest pace.

We want to invite you to legendary Gdansk, where it all began. President Lech Walesa, Nobel Prize winner, will open the discussion about the future of the region with his keynote.

The breakthrough of 1989, besides the obvious explosion of hope for a better tomorrow, faith and enthusiasm, soon brought in Poland the conviction that we have a long and arduous road ahead of us in building a stable democracy and market economy. At that time, the conviction of the need to join European structures and NATO became widespread. On this road, foreign investment proved to be helpful, bringing capital and becoming a sure guarantee of the irreversibility of the reform process. They also brought, as it soon turned out, decent returns for investors who dared to take risks. (…)

The European Solidarity Centre is a state-of-the-art cultural institution and an open city space in which people, values and ideas come together. ECS, opened in August 2014, is still a new building on the map of Gdańsk. It was built in the historic space of the Gdańsk Shipyard, where Solidarność was born in August 1980, to commemorate the Polish peaceful revolution which changed the face of entire Central and Eastern Europe. The ECS is today an icon of Gdańsk.
The building’s heart is a permanent exhibition to commemorate the Solidarity revolution and the downfall of communism in Europe; other features include an education centre, an R&D centre, archive, library and multimedia collection.
The ECS is an excellent venue for cultural events, conferences, seminars and business meetings with its Auditorium, Temporary Exhibition Hall, workhop meeting rooms and a beautiful year-round attractive space of Winter Garden.
Each year, we organise more than 600 events, with participants including heads of state, outstanding intellectuals, scholars, people of culture and business from all over the world. Together with our local partners, we will assist you in organising your event in Gdańsk to be long and fondly remembered by your guests.
